Wall display
Pairing a screen
Any device with a modern browser can become your wall calendar — a tablet propped in the kitchen, an old laptop in the hall, a cheap panel from Amazon.
Pairing a new screen
- 1
Open /pair on the screen
On the device you want to use as a display, open a browser and go to kerfuff.app/pair. A six-digit code appears automatically. You do not need to sign in on the display device.
- 2
Open Settings → Displays in the app
On your phone or computer, go to Settings → Displays → Add a display. You will be asked to enter the six-digit code shown on the screen.
- 3
Enter the code and choose settings
Enter the code, give the display a name, choose its role (Shared, One person only, or View only) and optionally assign a layout.
- 4
Set a PIN (optional)
Back on the display device, you will be prompted to set a 4-digit PIN. This is stored only on that device and prevents accidental changes to display settings.
- 5
The display is live
The screen switches to the wall calendar view immediately. It stays live automatically — no need to log in again.
Codes expire after 5 minutes
If you do not enter the code within 5 minutes, the display generates a new one automatically. Just use the latest code shown on screen.
Free plan: up to 2 displays
The free plan supports 2 paired displays. The paid plan removes this limit. See Plans & billing.
Display roles
Each display has a role that controls what it can see and whether it can be interacted with:
| Role | What it shows | Can interact | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shared (full) | All household calendars | Yes | Kitchen, living room |
| One person only | One person's calendars only | Yes | Child's bedroom, home office |
| View only | All household calendars | No | Guest room, public area |
You can change a display's role at any time from Settings → Displays without needing to re-pair.
Display views
The wall display shows a calendar grid. You can configure how many days are shown at once:
- AutoAutomatically chooses the best number of days based on screen size and orientation. Portrait narrow screens show 1 day; large landscape screens show up to 5 days.
- 1 dayToday only. Good for a small screen or portrait tablet.
- 2 daysToday and tomorrow.
- 3 daysA three-day rolling window.
- 5 daysA work-week view.
- 7 daysA full week.
Change this in the display's settings panel (tap the settings icon on the display itself, or from Settings → Displays in the app).
Layouts
Layouts are saved sets of display preferences that you can create once and assign to any screen. A layout controls:
- ✓How many days to show
- ✓Whether to show the profile filter rail (filter by person)
- ✓Whether to show the today rail (chores, dinner, shopping list)
- ✓Whether to show upcoming countdowns
- ✓Whether photos screensaver is enabled
Paid feature: multiple layouts
The free plan includes one saved layout. The paid plan allows unlimited layouts — useful if you have screens in different rooms with different needs.
Screensaver & sleep
When the display is left untouched, it switches to a photo screensaver. At night, it dims or goes fully dark.
Screensaver
- •Activates after a configurable idle time (default: 5 minutes; options: 1–30 minutes).
- •Shows your household photos in a cycle (default: 20 seconds each; configurable 1–120 seconds).
- •Overlays time, date, the next 3 upcoming events, and upcoming countdowns.
- •Photo order can be shuffle (random) or chronological.
- •Background behind portrait photos can be blurred fill or solid black.
- •A single tap wakes the screensaver for 30 minutes.
Night sleep
- •After bedtime (default: 22:00), the display dims fully to a black screen.
- •It wakes automatically if an event is starting within 20 minutes.
- •The morning rush window (06:30–09:00) keeps the display awake.
- •You can disable night sleep entirely with the 'Keep screen bright' toggle in display settings.
Offline mode
The display caches your household data locally. If it loses internet connectivity, it continues showing your calendar from the cache.
| Status | Badge colour | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Fresh | Green | Data updated within the last 60 minutes. |
| Stale | Amber | Data not updated for more than 60 minutes. |
| Offline | Shown as badge | No connection; showing cached data. |
2-hour offline notification
If a display has not checked in for more than 2 hours, household members with notifications enabled will receive an alert. Check the display device is still powered on and connected to Wi-Fi.
Unpairing a display
Go to Settings → Displays, find the display and tap Unpair. The display screen goes blank immediately. To use it again, repeat the pairing process.
Unpairing does not affect any calendar data.
